Lookup Sumter County Jail Inmates

Sumter County Jail is the county jail facility for local bookings, pretrial detainees, short local sentences, and people held on warrants or agency holds in Sumter County, Georgia. To look up inmates at Sumter County Jail, use the county jail roster first, then confirm details with jail staff when a release, transfer, bond change, or new booking may not yet be reflected online. The jail roster is separate from the state prison locator used for sentenced Georgia Department of Corrections offenders.

Sumter County Jail Overview

Sumter County Jail is operated by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office. The jail is listed by the county at 352 McMath Mill Road, P.O. Box 726, Americus, GA 31719, with phone (229) 924-4094 and fax (229) 924-3450. The county jail page names Captain Don Mason and Lieutenant Lakendra Wakefield as jail command contacts. Public hours posted for the county jail page are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

The county describes the jail's purpose as safety, security, and service for the inmate population, staff, and visitors. It also states that efficient operation includes reducing prisoner idleness through inmate labor in sanitation, food service, and laundry. That local purpose statement is important because it identifies the facility as the working county jail, not the neighboring correctional institute. Sumter County Correctional Institute is nearby on McMath Mill Road, but it is a separate state-supervised correctional institute with a different lookup system.

The official jail page capture shows the county source that links the public to the jail roster and lists the jail's main contact block.

The screenshot supports a practical rule for Sumter County jail searches: begin with the county jail page or its linked roster, then call the same jail number if online data does not answer the custody question.

Sumter Jail Capacity and Population

The best current public count found in the research came from the InteropWeb Current Inmates roster. On June 4, 2026, the current-inmates tab showed page 1 of 18 with 179 items. That number should be treated as a roster count at the time of inspection. It is not a rated jail capacity, not an average daily population, and not a permanent population statistic. Live roster totals can change as people are booked, released, transferred, or moved to court orders.

The official county jail page and the GDC county jail contact material reviewed for Sumter County did not publish a rated bed capacity, construction year, pod layout, housing-unit map, or visitor-entry diagram. Because no official county capacity was located, the Sumter County Jail page should not be described as a facility with a known published capacity. The neighboring Sumter County Correctional Institute has a published capacity of up to 350 offenders, but that figure belongs to the correctional institute, not the county jail.

Search Sumter County Jail Roster

The correct online lookup for Sumter County Jail is the InteropWeb roster linked from the county jail page. The platform, hosted by Synergistic Software, has tabs for Current Inmates, 24 Hours Arrests, and Inmates by Arrest Date. It is free public access, and no login was observed in the research capture. The roster covers county jail bookings. It does not replace the Georgia Department of Corrections locator for sentenced state offenders at Sumter County Correctional Institute or other GDC facilities.

  1. Open the InteropWeb Sumter County roster and start with Current Inmates when the person may still be held at the jail.
  2. Enter a last name or partial name in the optional name filter, or browse the paginated roster.
  3. Use 24 Hours Arrests for very recent bookings, including people who may already show as released.
  4. Use Inmates by Arrest Date when an approximate booking date is known, then filter by date range and name.
  5. Read the status, arresting agency, total bond, court field, and charge table before calling the jail to confirm release or transfer.

Sumter Jail Booking Records

A Sumter County Jail roster entry can show a booking photo, name, status, sex, height, weight, city and state address, arrest date, arresting agency, days in jail, total bond, and charge rows. Arresting agencies visible in the research included Americus Police Department, Sumter County Sheriff's Office, Georgia State Patrol Americus, Department of Natural Resources, Webster County Sheriff's Office, and other agencies. Some entries may include typos or abbreviated agency names, so exact spelling is not always the best search method.

For older booking records, accident reports, local criminal-history requests, or records that are not visible on the roster, use the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Records Division. The sheriff's office page lists the same McMath Mill Road complex and main phone. The county FAQ says accident reports are obtained by coming to the Sheriff's Office and asking for the Records Division. It also lists local criminal history requests at $20 cash only through Records. Georgia's Open Records Act may apply to written requests, including the three-business-day response rule for available records.

Note: Use court records after jail arrest for filed charges and dispositions, not the jail roster alone.

Sumter County Jail Contact

Call the jail before traveling, sending mail, sending funds, or relying on an online status. The roster may lag behind a release, transfer, bond order, or court hold. The jail phone is also the fallback when a person is not found because of name spelling, punctuation, booking delay, or transfer to another agency. If staff cannot provide a record by phone, ask whether the Sheriff's Office Records Division is the right route for a written request.

Sumter Jail Visits and Rules

The official county jail page located in the research did not publish a detailed Sumter County Jail visitation schedule, mail format, video visit vendor, inmate phone vendor, or commissary deposit provider. That absence is a content fact, not a gap to fill with third-party jail-directory claims. For county jail inmates, call (229) 924-4094 and ask staff to confirm whether the person can receive a visit, what identification is required, whether visits are in person or video, and whether the inmate must place the visitor on a list.

Georgia law also matters for visits. O.C.G.A. § 42-4-13 prohibits bringing drugs, weapons, alcohol, tobacco, and other contraband into jail guard lines without authorization. When visitor-entry rules are not posted online, call first and bring only required identification and allowed items.

Mail Money and Phone Fallback

The county jail sources located for Sumter County did not publish a jail mail format, commissary vendor, phone vendor, deposit fees, or online deposit instructions. Do not use the Sumter County Correctional Institute money rules for the jail. SCCI has its own certified money order, commissarydeposit.com, kiosk, and Access Securepak rules for state-supervised offenders. Those rules are not documented as Sumter County Jail rules.

Booking at Sumter County Jail

The local booking path begins when a Sumter County agency or another visible arresting agency brings a person to the jail. Intake creates the roster record, including identity, photo, arrest date, arresting agency, status, total bond, and charge rows. The 24 Hours Arrests tab can show people who were booked and released within a short period, while the arrest-date tab can help find entries by date range.

Booking charges are not the same as final court outcomes. The roster charge table may list State Court or Superior Court, but prosecutors and courts control formal filings after arrest. If the person is sentenced to state custody or assigned to Sumter County Correctional Institute, the GDC Find an Offender page becomes the right lookup. If a federal or immigration case is involved, the county roster may not give the full custody picture.

Recent Sumter Jail News

A February 9, 2026 Associated Press report described an escape involving two Sumter County Jail inmates in Americus. The report said Sheriff Eric Bryant stated that the inmates appeared to have escaped through a maintenance door in the ceiling that was not locked properly and then used an HVAC route to get outside. That item should be treated as recent news reporting, not as a complete official facility history or a current statement of jail conditions.

A January 10, 2024 GBI press release also shows how arrests can flow into Sumter County Jail after a multi-agency investigation. The GBI said a man from Americus was arrested after a drug investigation with GBI Southwestern Regional Drug Enforcement Office and Americus Police Department, and then booked at Sumter County Jail. It is a useful example of how a local jail booking can involve state investigators, city police, multiple charges, and later court processing.
